Nepal's National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy 2082 was approved in August 2025, marking a significant step for the nation's technological development. While the policy represents crucial progress, the challenge lies in translating this framework into tangible action, as other countries like India and those in the EU have already demonstrated AI's important place within the government. The policy aims to define how AI will be developed, and what guard rails are needed within Nepal.

Artificial Intelligence encompasses computer systems that replicate human intelligence capabilities, like language processing, image recognition, and complex decision-making. AI's prevalence is growing daily, appearing in everyday applications from voice assistants on phones to services monitoring suspicious bank transactions, and medical diagnosis systems. Millions of Nepalis already interact with AI-powered systems without necessarily realizing it, showing the importance for Nepal to define how AI is built and used.

Many governments globally have proactively addressed AI's implications. The European Union's AI Act, effective from August 2024, sets a benchmark for the responsible use of AI by categorizing systems based on risk, with bans for unacceptable applications and stringent requirements for high-risk systems. This approach prioritizes human rights and public safety amidst technological advancements, to ensure AI helps the public, rather than harms them.

India's IndiaAI Mission, launched in March 2024, illustrates a proactive approach, including infrastructure, innovation, data access, applications, workforce training, startup financing, and ethical AI, backed by a significant budget. This coordinated strategy demonstrates that governments need to play a central role in guiding AI's development and use, while not strangling innovation.

Nepal's AI policy faces a crucial implementation phase. The key now is the allocation of resources, the establishment of regulatory frameworks, and the promotion of public-private partnerships. Success will depend on coordinated efforts from both the the government and those in the tech sector.

For the Nepali diaspora, the effective implementation of this AI policy has direct relevance. It will likely impact employment opportunities in the tech sector and influence the quality of government services available to those living abroad and back home to Nepal and also increase the opportunities for diaspora-lead businesses. Furthermore, it ensures Nepal doesn't fall behind in the global technological landscape, which affects its economic and social connections.
